WORLD CUP 2014: CAMEROON’S ETO’O LIKELY TO MISS CROATIA MATCH

 

Are all hopes gone for Cameroon?

Cameroon captain Samuel Eto’o is almost certain to miss Wednesday’s World Cup game against Croatia because of injury.

Eto’o has not trained for two days and is unlikely to recover in time for the crucial Group A game in Manaus.

The 33-year-old striker wrote on Twitter: “The doctors confirm I will probably not be able to play because of a knee injury that is causing me pain.”

Cameroon and Croatia both lost their opening games and are facing early elimination from the tournament.

The Indomitable Lions fell 1-0 to unfancied Mexico , while Croatia were beaten 3-1 by Brazil.And both sides are aware their campaign would be all but ended by a second consecutive defeat.
Losing Eto’o would be a big blow for Cameroon, who were unable to impose themselves on Mexico and must improve significantly if they are to avoid an early exit.

Eto’o, who suffered a right knee injury at the end of his club season with Chelsea, told Cameroon Radio-Television (CRTV) he was hoping “the gods grant me a miracle and that I am able to defend my dear, beautiful country”.
He added: “If this is not the case, I will always play my role as captain and especially as the big brother to push my young team-mates to victory.
“For three and a half months, I have not had the time to recover. You could see that even in the build-up to the World Cup I hadn’t had a lot of practice until the friendly against Germany.”
“During the match against Mexico, I tried but after consulting the medical staff we realised that I needed a rest. Even in the ninth minute, I felt pain.”

TAKE-HOME MESSAGE FROM MEXICO’S 1-0 WIN OVER CAMEROON

Mexico won their World Cup opener 1-0, although it should probably have been closer to 3-0. Some more dubious refereeing had two of Mexico’s goals ruled offside in the first half. They came back strongly in the second, though, with Peralta scoring in the 61st minute, slotting in the rebound after Giovani Dos Santos shot was saved. It was a good win for Mexico, but a woeful run for Cameroon. Here are six things we learned.

1   Cameroon’s defense is something quite atrocious

    Cameroon’s defense was caught napping more than once. When Mexico scored, the defense was always as dodgy as the officiating. Cameroon went for the 4-5-1 formation, or so they would try to tell you. They struggled to keep things together and looked more like an octopus on roller skates than team holding form. If this is how they struggled against Mexico, fans might want to look away when they come up against Brazil.

CAMEROON IS IN TROUBLE

Even when going forward, Cameroon cannot hold their formation  

 

   Samuel Eto’o, with his dubious hair cut and all,was employed as the lone striker up front. That would not be a problem for most teams, but it is a problem when the attacking formation has absolutely zero consistency or potency. The Mexico keeper hardly had any work to do all throughout the match. No pressure on the opposition means no ways of forcing mistakes.

3    NeitherMexico nor Cameroon looks strong enough to trouble Croatia

 

Despite Croatia struggling to get forward last night, neither of these two teams show enough oomph to trouble them. Croatia are the other team who are favored to go through alongside Brazil. Mexico have never gone past the round of 16 in their own country, despite making it out of the group stages in the last five World Cups. Their match against Croatia is going be awesome.

4      The magic of Mexico’s wing backs

 

Cameroon asserted absolutely no pressure on Mexico’s midfield. Thus, they could pick their passes as they pleased. The Lions started off defending at an average length, but dropped back deeper and deeper the more Mexico attacked. The wing backs were really good at creeping in behind Cameroon’s full backs and Cedric Djeugoue was particularity dreadful while Benoit Assou-Ekotto also looked out of sorts. It took Mexico a while to get that final delivery to be threatening, and Cameroon were left to desperately tackle and block in the final third. Against a team more accurate and threatening on front of goal, Cameroon will be schooled.

Few things will be as bad as Cedric Djeugoue this World Cup

 

 Okay, the officiating could give him a run for his money. It might still be early days, but Djeugoue really had a horror show. It’s a surprise that he managed to stay on the pitch for 45 minutes. Replaced by Dany Nounkeu at half-time, Cameroon started looking slightly more solid. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting became the central focus of the team and found himself with more balls to pass on. As if by magic, Cameroon started looking more structured in the final third. Even Stephane M’Bia suddenly started to burst forward, finally realize that there is one massive gap between him and Eto’o when going forward.

 Even with those changes, though, Cameroon still looked amateur compared to Mexico.

Five months after the ASJUB\JMC EMINADO Party, all roads led to Mile 17, Buea, as the association continued its 19^th Open Day celebration with a gala.

The party drew almost 900inhabitants of Buea, Douala other parts of the country and beyond, who came to fine out for themselves the Mr. and Miss. JMC 2015.

The guest artists “Flori Boyz”, with their hit song, “MARABU” trilled the crowed.

It was dance, dance, dance till down. Once upon a time……..ASJUB\JMC Pala-Pala Party.

New Cameras in hand

Former Journalism and Mass Communication student and present lecturer of the department, Mrs. Manka’a Tabuwe recently donated five brand new digital cameras to the JMC department.

The donation that comes thanks to her partnership with “WITNESS” the U.S based Non- Governmental organization (NGO), was on the occasion of ASJUB\JMC’s celebration of its 19^thOpen Day.

Received by Journalism and Mass Communication Head of Department, Dr. Julius Che Tita, he said these cameras will boost the department’s production while calling on students to make good use of these equipments.

ASJUB\JMC’s 19^thOpen Day was celebrated under the theme:“The Place of Communication in Entrepreneurship”. It was in the presence of Journalism students (200,300,400 levels), parents and other members of the university community that, the guest speakers; Mrs. Sarah Simo, Regulatory and Communication Officer at British-American Tobacco, and Mr. Felix Fon-Ndikum, Vice-President, MTN Cameroon Legal, all former students of the department did presentations that gave participants at the CNPS Hall Mile 17, Buea, their experience and how to survive with the journalism training.

The celebration was characterized by news presentation, drama, debate and lots of others.

Its peak was during the ASJUB 2014 Awards in which seventeen lecturers of the department received appreciation from ASJUB. Also, the awards to meritorious students ranged from Best 200, 300 and 400 level students, Best camera person and many others (16 Awards in general).

CAMEROON PLAYERS READY TO TAKE OFF FOR BRAZIL AFTER BONUS DISPUTE

Finals this time

Cameroon’s players are finally on their way to the World Cup after initially refusing to board a flight to Brazil because of a dispute over bonuses.

The squad, including former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o, refused to fly to South America on Sunday morning.

But they eventually agreed a financial package with the nation’s football federation after an emergency meeting.

The squad took off from Yaounde at 21:30 BST, 12 hours late, and  arrived in Brazil on Sunday evening.

 

We are coming

Team coach Volker Finke had said players were complaining that the £61,000 they were due to be paid for figuring in the World Cup was not enough.

After agreeing an end to the row, Cameroon Football Federation president Joseph Owona said: “Everything has been resolved.

“We have opted for transparency. There is no problem and I think the team needs to be mobilised for all to look in one direction.”

Cameroon is in Group A with the hosts, Croatia and Mexico.

 300-500 BOKO HARAM MEN RAID THE FAR-NORTH REGION OF CAMEROON

Some 300-500 men of the Boko Haram terrorist group who invaded a village called Gowi Touro, 50km from the Mayo Tchanaga Divisional headquarter,Mokolo in the north of the country last weekend were chased out by Cameroon defense forces. they are said to have looted food reserves and burnt many houses.

Two Cameroonians, one of them a soldier of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) and many Boko Haram militants died during the gunfire over the weekend in that part of the country. 

 

In other developments, top security officials from member countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission are strategising on how best to address rising insecurity in the sub-region. The five day meeting underway in Ebolowa, South Region is jointly organized by the ministry of Defense and the American government.

EBOLA DEATH TOLL HITS 208 IN GUINEA

Africa in trouble

Some 208 people have now died from the Ebola virus in Guinea after a deadly spike in recent days, world health officials say. 

 

At least 21 people died and 37 new cases of suspected Ebola were found between 29 May and 1 June, bringing the total number of cases in the West African country to 328.

Of these, 193 have been confirmed by laboratory tests.

There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola – one of the world’s deadliest viruses.

More than half of the new deaths were in the southern Guekedou region, where the outbreak is centred.

The Virus

Three confirmed and 10 suspected new cases were recorded in neighbouring Sierra Leone over the same period.

Six people are believed to have died there, as well as 10 in Liberia.

Medical charities say one reason for the increase is that some people are refusing to go to hospital for treatment, preferring to seek help from traditional healers.

Ebola, a haemorrhagic fever, can kill up to 90% of those infected and is passed on through contact with the fluids of infected people or animals, such as urine, sweat and blood.

But people have a better chance of surviving if it is identified early and they receive medical attention.

Experts from the World Health Organisation and the Doctors Without Borders charity are in the region, and about 600 people are under observation after having possible contact with Ebola.

G7 LEADERS WARN RUSSIA OF FRESH SANCTIONS OVER UKRAINE

Leaders of the G7 industrial nations meeting in Brussels say they are prepared to impose further sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine.A joint statement condemned Moscow for its “continuing violation” of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The G7 summit is the first since Russia was expelled from the group following its annexation of Crimea in March.
On Thursday, leaders are set to discuss the global economic outlook, climate change and development issues.
Although Russian President Vladimir Putin is not at the Brussels summit, he will hold face-to-face talks with some G7 leaders – not including US President Barack Obama – in Paris afterwards.However, both Mr Putin and Mr Obama will attend a ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France on Friday.

While in Poland on Wednesday, President Obama warned Moscow against what he called its “dark tactics” in Ukraine.
Diplomacy has intensified to try to resolve the biggest crisis in years between Russia and the West, says the BBC’s Chris Morris in Brussels.
G7 leaders gathered in Brussels on Wednesday evening for the summit’s opening dinner.
“We are united in condemning the Russian Federation’s continuing violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the leaders said in a joint statement.
“We stand ready to intensify targeted sanctions and to consider meaningful additional restrictive measures to impose further costs on Russia should events so require.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters: “We can’t afford a further destabilisation of Ukraine.”
“We have made clear that we want to continue with our three-step approach – support Ukraine in economic issues, talks with Russia, and should there no progress on all those issues… the possibility of sanctions, tougher sanctions, remains on the table,” she said.

U.S & UKRAINE

Earlier, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said he expected the G7 to send a clear message of support for Ukraine.

The summit was originally to have been held in the Russian city of Sochi.

Speaking in Warsaw to mark 25 years since the fall of communism in Poland, Mr Obama hailed Polish democracy as a beacon for neighbouring Ukraine.

He also met Ukraine’s President-elect Petro Poroshenko, and pledged support for plans to restore peace to the country.But he also condemned what he called Russian “aggression” in eastern Ukraine,

“How can we allow the dark tactics of the 20th Century to define the 21st?” he said.

Mr Obama pledged $5m (£3m) of military assistance to Kiev including body armour and night-vision goggles.

Mr Poroshenko, a billionaire sweet manufacturer, was elected in May.

US President Barack Obama: “We stand together now and forever, for your freedom is ours”He will be at the D-Day commemorations ahead of his inauguration on Saturday and said he did not rule out meeting Mr Putin.

Mr Putin told French TV he was “not going to avoid any of them” but said Mr Poroshenko needed to be serious about a dialogue with factions in eastern Ukraine.

MEXICO DOUBLES PRISON SENTENCES FOR KIDNAPPING

Mexico has published new sentencing guidelines that will double prison sentences for kidnapping. The minimum prison term has risen from 20 to 40 years.It will apply for all abductions, including those that last only a few hours or days, so-called “express kidnappings”.The maximum prison sentence will rise from 50 to 140 years for those who kill their victims.

Kidnappings committed by a public security official, such as a member of the police or military, will be punished with up to 100 years in prison.

Kidnappers will also have to pay heavy fines.

In reality, few people ever receive sentences longer than 60 years for federal crimes, but kidnapping is considered in a separate category.

The number of kidnappings reported to the police has risen dramatically in Mexico in recent years.

In 2007, 438 kidnappings were reported, but the number had risen to almost 1,700 last year.

And the government estimates the number of kidnappings reported to the police could be fewer than 2% of the total.

If that is the case, the real number of abductions could be about 105,000 per year.

Analysts say accurate figures are hard to come by, as many abductions only last for hours or a few days until the victims empty their bank accounts at gunpoint or pay a ransom.

Most are never reported to the authorities for fear of reprisals from the criminal gang which carried out the kidnapping.

In January this year the Mexican government launched a nationwide effort to fight kidnapping.

A federal prosecutor, Renato Sales, was named to head an anti-kidnapping committee that would co-ordinate efforts to fight abductions in the 10 Mexican states (out of 31) where 74% of all kidnappings take place.
